THIS DISH HAS NO SINGLE INVENTORIS ITS ORIGIN .IT IS BELIEVED THAT ITS ROOTS ARE PREHISPANIC AND COLONIAL, THAT THIS SOUP IS EATEN IN THE MOUNTAINS TO REVIVE ENERGY.

IN PERU, THERE IS A TYPICAL DISH CALLED MONKEY SOUP. PERUVIANS REALLY LIKE IT SINCE MONKEYS ARE THE MOST COMMON ANIMAL IN PERU. THIS DISH IS VERY TYPICAL SINCE PERUVIAN GRANDPARENTS USED TO MAKE IT FOR THEIR CHILDREN.

CULTURAL BACKGROUND

IN PERU, THERE IS A TYPICAL DISH CALLED MONKEY SOUP (SOPA DE MONO). THIS DISH IS MAINLY FOUND IN THE AMAZONIAN REGIONS, ESPECIALLY IN AREAS LIKE LORETO AND UCAYALI, WHERE MONKEY MEAT HAS BEEN PART OF TRADITIONAL HUNTER-GATHERER DIETS FOR CENTURIES. INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES PREPARED THIS SOUP NOT ONLY AS FOOD BUT ALSO AS A SOURCE OF ENERGY DURING LONG HUNTS.

PERUVIANS FROM THE JUNGLE REGIONS VALUE THIS SOUP AS PART OF THEIR CULTURAL HERITAGE. IT IS OFTEN COOKED WITH LOCAL HERBS, PLANTAINS, AND OTHER VEGETABLES, GIVING IT A UNIQUE FLAVOR. HOWEVER, IT IS NOT COMMONLY EATEN IN THE CITIES OR COASTAL AREAS OF PERU.

TRADITION AND CHANGE

PERUVIAN GRANDPARENTS FROM THE AMAZON USED TO MAKE THIS SOUP FOR THEIR FAMILIES AS A WAY TO PASS ON TRADITION. TODAY, DUE TO ENVIRONMENTAL LAWS AND THE PROTECTION OF WILDLIFE, HUNTING MONKEYS IS RESTRICTED. MANY COMMUNITIES HAVE SWITCHED TO OTHER MEATS, LIKE CHICKEN OR FISH, WHILE KEEPING THE SAME RECIPE AND FLAVORS.

MONKEY SOUP REMAINS A SYMBOL OF ANCIENT AMAZONIAN CULTURE, BUT IT IS NOW RARE AND SOMETIMES ONLY FOUND IN REMOTE VILLAGES OR DURING SPECIAL CEREMONIES.

EVERY ONE IS VERY HAPPY EXCEPT FOR OUR DEAR MONKEY FRIEND WHO REALLY LIKES JACUZZIS, BUT MAYBE NOT IN THE WAY HE WANTED.
